One of the most rewarding walks from Maker, this 5.8km circular route takes you through open fields, past the historic Maker Church, into the beautiful Mount Edgcumbe Deer Park, and along a stunning coastal path with views of Kingsand Bay all the way. Allow a comfortable 1.5 to 2 hours, and wear sturdy shoes.

The Route
Come out of Helen's shop and out of the car park, then head left past the large white Napoleonic building.
After the Sea Forts sign, keep walking straight on the track for approximately 200 metres. When you reach the open gate, turn left across a grassy field. You will see Maker Church directly ahead of you in the distance.
As you reach the edge of the field, turn left onto the single-track tarmac road and enjoy the view to your right of the breakwater at the entrance to Plymouth Sound and the Devon coastline beyond. Stay on the road as it bends to the left, past some barn conversions, then take the next right turning towards Fort Picklecombe.
Across the Fields
After 100 metres, look for a break in the hedge on the left and go through the wooden swing gate onto a footpath to the right and across a field.
Go through the break in the next hedge and continue on the footpath across the next field to a stile.
Cross the driveway and continue on the marked footpath to the left of the stone cottage.
Maker Church
Stay on this narrow footpath until you reach a break in the hedge that takes you into a field. Turn right onto the track around the edge of the field, heading towards Maker Church. As you approach the church, you'll have lovely views of the River Tamar and the bridge on your left.
Follow the driveway that goes to the left of the church, over the cattle grid and into the car park area. Go through the gate at the far right-hand side of the car park, facing directly towards the sea.
Mount Edgcumbe Deer Park
Follow the track straight ahead and down the hill towards the sea. This is Mount Edgcumbe Deer Park — please make sure you close the gate and keep dogs on the lead in this area.
Follow the grass path as it heads towards the sea and past a couple of wooden benches — wonderful spots to enjoy views of Kingsand Bay, weather permitting.
As the path curves to the right, take the lower path that drops down into a small valley heading towards the sea.
The Coastal Path to Kingsand
At the bottom of the slope, go through a wooden gate and turn right onto the tarmac track for approximately 50 metres. Then turn left onto the coastal path towards Kingsand for 1.5km.
This path has beautiful views of the bay on your left all the way.
At the end of the path you'll go through a wooden gate and onto the road.
Turning left would take you down into the village of Kingsand — but our walk takes you right and up the steep Devonport Hill, between some houses.
Back to the Start
Stay on the track as it narrows and turns to the right onto a rocky path which climbs for approximately 100 metres.
At the top of the path, where two paths meet, turn right and follow this path with lovely views of the sea on your right.
Top tip: Along this path are two wooden seats which are wonderful places to stop, rest, and enjoy an incredible view of the bay.
When you reach a set of wooden steps on your left and the imposing Granville Battery, turn left up the steps.
Follow the path, cross a tarmac lane, and carry on straight ahead on a narrow pathway up the slope. This will eventually bring you back to the large white Napoleonic building — and on to Helen's shop for some well-earned browsing.
What to Bring & Best Time to Visit
Footwear: Sturdy walking shoes or boots are recommended — there are some steep and rocky sections, particularly on the climb up Devonport Hill.
Best time of year: This walk is beautiful year-round, but spring and summer offer the best coastal views. The deer park is particularly lovely in the early morning.
Suitable for: Reasonably fit walkers. The route includes some steep climbs and uneven terrain — not suitable for pushchairs or wheelchairs.
Dogs: Welcome, but must be kept on leads through Mount Edgcumbe Deer Park.
Parking: Park at Maker outside Helen's shop. The walk starts and ends here.
