At Helen Round, we’re all about finding joy in the simple things — a walk by the sea, a cup of tea in your favourite mug, or a moment of stillness at the end of a busy day. And if that peaceful pause includes a square (or two!) of dark chocolate, even better.
Here’s the good news: dark chocolate isn’t just a delicious indulgence — it’s packed with health-boosting properties that make it one of life’s most delightful feel-good treats. We keep some in our lovely shop for people to buy as they pop in, simply because we know that chocolate is a lovely treat, for yourself or a gift for others.
The team and I learnt how to make dark chocolate, using plant based raw ingredients in a workshop led by Justine at Greenheart Kitchen. I've carried on making my own chocolate every since, for my own use and for friends and family. I try to keep the sugar content low and where possible use organic ingredients.
A Little Luxury That’s Good for You
Rich in flavour and full of natural antioxidants, dark chocolate (especially 70% cocoa or higher) is bursting with flavonoids — plant compounds known to support heart health, reduce inflammation, and protect the body from free radicals. These are the same powerful antioxidants found in fruit and green tea.
So when you savour that smooth, bittersweet taste, you’re doing something lovely for both body and soul.
A Heart-Warming Treat
Research has shown that moderate amounts of dark chocolate can improve circulation, lower blood pressure, and even reduce “bad” cholesterol. It’s a small, satisfying way to give your heart a little extra love.
We like to enjoy a square alongside a cup of herbal tea in one of our gorgeous bone china mugs.

Boost Your Mood, Naturally
Dark chocolate is a well-known mood booster — and for good reason! It helps stimulate serotonin and endorphin production, your body’s natural happiness chemicals, while a gentle dose of caffeine sharpens focus and lifts energy.
Whether you’re working, creating, or unwinding after a long day, a mindful chocolate moment can be just what you need to feel centred and inspired.

Nourish Your Skin from Within
Those antioxidants don’t just help your heart — they’re great for your skin too. Regular, moderate indulgence can improve hydration and elasticity, helping your skin glow from the inside out.

Mindful Indulgence
When choosing your chocolate, go for quality over quantity. Look for brands that use ethically sourced cocoa and minimal added sugar — it’s better for you and for the planet.
Take a deep breath, slow down, and let each bite melt gently. Like all good things in life, dark chocolate is best enjoyed slowly and mindfully. It's the perfect ingredient to keep in your bag for a quiet momement or for a bit of a pick me up.

Delicious Chocolate Cake Recipe: A Taste of Wellbeing
This recipe is very straightforward. I think I found it online originally and just scribbled the recipe down, so thank you to whoever originally put it together, it's so good!

Make the Cake
Line two 8" sandwich tins and heat your oven to 180°C.
1. Blend 50g of cocoa powder with 6 tbsp of boiling water in a mixing bowl.
2. Mix in 3 large eggs, 50ml of milk, 175g of SR flour, 1 tsp baking powder, 100g of softened butter and 275g of caster sugar.
3. Beat until you have a smooth, thick batter (you can do this in a machine or by hand).
4. Divide the mixture evenly between the two tins and level the surface. Cook for 25 mins or until the cake springs back when prodded! Cool on a rack.
Make the Filling
5. Heat 150g of broken plain chocolate with 75ml of double cream in a bowl over a pan of boiling water until it's melted and combined. If it separates, don't worry, whisk it energetically until it thickens. It will thicken further as it cools so wait until it's spreadable.
6. Sandwich the two cakes together with jam, whipped cream, fresh fruit (raspberries are very tasty with chocolate) or simply the chocolate ganache. Then spread the rest on top.
7. Share with friends and family - the easiest cake ever!
