Getting Picked!

Bovey Tracey Contemporary Craft - 5 Festival Favourites from Polly Leonard, Founder of Selvedge

Getting picked has always evoked memories of standing on a windy school field, waiting to have your name called out. Yes, that dreadful moment when the teacher chooses two captains to pick their teams for the rounder’s match. Sport was never my strong point and this was the moment I most dreaded. Let’s face it, I knew I would never be in the top 10 picks I would be one of those stragglers, the girls left at the end, that the ‘chosen Captain’ looked upon with dread….trying to choose the best of a bad bunch! So imagine my surprise and excitement when I was recently picked to be in  someone’s Top 5!! And not just ‘anyone’s Top 5’ – Polly Leonard, (the founder of my favourite magazine Selvedge)’s Top 5!!! Polly has chosen her 5 Festival Favourites, from over 200 designer makers, as the one’s to watch at this years upcoming Contemporary Craft Festival at Bovey Tracy. Here’s what she said about us:

I love linen, so Helen Round’s work has immediate appeal. Her pared down line drawings work perfectly with this fabric – as does her choice of  subject matter – botanical illustrations. Tea towels this pretty make doing the dishes almost pleasurable.

Do put the date in your diary. It’s a wonderful event, a fabulous day out and one not to be missed. Make sure you come and say hello…you never know, you might just get picked as a winner in an exciting competition we shall be running during the event… more news on that later. Check out the other craft, home and garden events we are attending this year…. with not a game of rounder’s in sight!! Looking forward to catching up with you again in a few weeks time. Helen

How time flies! A few weeks ago, we were invited to exhibit at the first ever Stylish Home and Garden Show which was held in the beautiful surroundings of Mount Edgcumbe House and Gardens. Despite the weather (one thing you can never plan), visitors were aplenty, coming by car and across the water on our fabulous little Cremyll Ferry.

The show brought together some of our finest regional businesses and design talent, offering its visitors a unique and inspiring weekend where they could enjoy workshops, demonstrations and shopping within the amazing surroundings of the Mount Edgcumbe Country Park.

It really was wonderful to be exhibiting so close to home….as so often these days we are charging up the motorway and finding hotels to stay in during shows and exhibitions. We certainly didn’t have to worry about forgetting things, with only a few minutes drive back to the studio for topping up supplies. We were exhibiting in the house, where beautiful live music was provided by a harpist on Saturday and a pianist on the grand piano on Sunday. We welcomed so many lovely visitors to our stand and our linen tea towels and bread bags were our best selling products over the weekend.

It was a pleasure to meet up with Annterior, Cornish Interiors, Odds and Suds, The Upcycled Home, Vintage Light and Shade and many other local exhibitors.  I have included some photos of the day taken by Cathryn of Cornish Interiors….to give you a feel of the wonderful time we enjoyed over the weekend. Finally, a big ‘thank you’ to Miss Ivy Events for putting on such a good show!
